A battlefield game focusing on crime and policing; the war on crime

Traditional battlefield games have been played out on actual war zones, but battlefield Hardlines takes a different approach. Players adopt the role of a policeman in LA fighting the war against drugs. the game has multiple modes including a fairly lengthy single player story mode that will have players shooting their way from plot point to plot point. Multi player modes will have players adopting the roles of criminals or policemen in classic matches of capture the flag or more unique modes like Blood money. At it's heart Hardlines is a first person shooting game with elements of stealth and there isn't much in the way of puzzle solving or mystery solving. Most of the problems are either solved by cut scenes or by shooting someone in the head.

Game Play

Battlefields Hardline plays like a Battlefield game which is a good thing. Players have access to police equipment as well as military grade weapons (this IS the war on crime) and vehicles. The AI for enemies and partners isn't the best, however, so you'll have to rely on your own skills to take down the enemies you need to. A stealth system allows you to sneak around your opponents to get the element of surprise and an interrogation system gives you a way to get some of the answers you need without having to rely exclusively on cut scenes. Multi player game modes include interesting variations like Cross Hairs, where criminals are trying to assassinate a witness that the police are tasked with bringing safely to an extraction point. Blood Money involves two teams racing to grab money from an open stash in the middle of the map and running it safely back to their armored car base. The variations provide some flavor to the game.

Presentation

This game looks and plays like a battlefield game and the graphics are top notch, high caliber. Models are clean and the environments incorporate large and small scale events that utilize the physics engine and change the landscape. This is a modern game and looks and plays as such. Some of the acting is a little over the top and the story is about what you'd expect of a bunch of militant cops cracking down on a drug lord but it's at least B grade movie material and entertaining.

Pros

  • Great visuals
  • Neat mechanics with an interesting stealth and interrogation system

Cons

  • AI in teammates as well as enemies is lacking
